The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) have declared Robben Island, the Greater St Lucia Wetlands Park and the Sterkfontein Caves (The Cradle of Humankind) as World Heritage Sites. The Drakensberg (Umhlumbo) is also a World Heritage Site.

The Cradle of Humankind, Gauteng, offers the world the most complete evidence of the origin of modern humans, with hominid fossils dating back over 3.3 million years.
